Custom built Containerized Substation & Instrumentation Modules - one more success story

August, 2017

Chalmers successfully delivered an engineering, procurement and construction contract for custom built Substation and Instrumentation modules to be installed in Iraq for O&G major Gazprom.

Both the Substation Module, which also contained a separate battery room, and the Instrumentation module were provided with independent lighting and small power fixtures, cable trays, fire detection and HVAC systems. All fixtures were suitable for safe area operation except the battery room which was provided with zone certified electrical fixtures and also a wall mounted portable eye wash for emergencies.

The structural design of the modules were in compliance with API RP 2A WSD requirements/AISC standard requirements with all primary framework and secondary steel sections including floor, roof & wall plates built with ASTM A36 / S275JR grade steel. Internally, the modules were insulated to provide 2-hours fire resistance as per ASTM E119-12a complete with 2-hour fire rated steel doors.

Each module was equipped with 100% duty & standby air cooled package units suitable for safe area operation along with fiberglass insulated galvanized sheet steel ductwork complete with necessary supports and accessories. All air inlets and outlets were fitted with required diffusers, grilles, registers, exhaust air louvers and fresh air sand trap louver. The ducting also consisted of electric fire dampers (suitable for UL555 certification) on duct penetrations, volume control dampers (VCD) & pressure relief dampers (PRD). 100% duty & standby exhaust fans were also provided in the battery room suitable for Zone 1 IIC T3 area classification.

A stand-alone conventional fire detection system was provided for the shelters along with smoke detectors, manual call points, alarm sounders and hydrogen gas detectors for the battery room. The module also had a security Access Control System (ACS) and CCTV cameras installed by Chalmers. Apart from the above, Chalmers also performed the installation of Client free-issued equipment such as E&I panels, LV switchboards, UPS and interconnecting cabling. etc.

The successful delivery of this project adds another chapter of association with our repeat client Schneider Electric and reiterates the faith placed by renowned clients in Chalmers to deliver quality products and services in a safe and sustainable way, on time, and in accordance with the needs of all parties concerned.
